Pure Mind
A sadhu came and stood in front of Maharaj Mangalabai's house saying "Bhiksham Dehi". Hearing his voice Mangalabai came with alms. She looked very upset. She came out and said to Sadhu Maharaj, "Maharaj, I am very upset, preach something to me." Sadhu Maharaj said, "Mai, not today, but I will preach to you tomorrow." Hearing these words of Maharaja, Mangalabai became very angry and That Phankarya said, "Then I will give you alms tomorrow."
The next day Sadhu Maharaj again went to that house to beg for alms. While coming, he took some soil in his begging bowl. Mangalabai was also waiting for Sadhu Maharaj to come and preach today with good donations. Sadhu Maharaj came in front of the house and gave alms saying "Bhiksham Dehi". Mangalabai came with alms. As he was about to give alms, he noticed that there was soil in the alms vessel. She quickly said to the Sadhu Maharaja, "Sir, if there is dirt and garbage in the alms bowl, what should I put the alms in?" Maharaj said, "I can." You should give alms.'' Mangalabai said, "I will not put food in the alms bowl when it is soiled." Hearing this, Maharaj said, "You will give alms only after cleaning the alms bowl." Then that is the advice to you. Yesterday you become overwhelmed with sorrow and anxiety, your mind is disturbed; Then how could I have preached to you?

निर्मळ मन
‘‘भिक्षां देही’’ म्हणत एक साधू महाराज मंगलाबाईंच्या घरासमोर येऊन उभे राहिले. त्यांचा आवाज ऐकून मंगलाबाई भिक्षा घेऊन आल्या. त्या फार अस्वस्थ दिसत होत्या. बाहेर येऊन साधू महाराजांना म्हणाल्या, ‘‘महाराज, मी फार अस्वस्थ आहे मला काहीतरी उपदेश करा.’’ साधू महाराज म्हणाले, ‘‘माई, आज नाही, पण मी तुला उद्या उपदेश करीन.’’ महाराजांचे हे शब्द ऐकून मंगलाबाईंना अतिशय राग आला व त्या फणकार्याने म्हणाला, ‘‘मग तुम्हाला मी भिक्षाही उद्याच घालीन.’’
दुसऱ्या दिवशी साधू महाराज भिक्षा मागण्यासाठी पुन्हा त्या घराकडे निघाले. येताना त्यांनी आपल्या भिक्षापात्रात थोडी माती घेतली. साधू महाराज आज येऊन उपदेश करणार म्हणून मंगलाबाई सुद्धा चांगले दान घेऊन त्यांची वाट पहात होत्या. साधूमहाराजांनी घरासमोर येऊन ‘‘भिक्षां देही’’ अशी आळी दिली. मंगलाबाई भिक्षा घेऊन आल्या. भिक्षा घालणार तितक्यात त्यांच्या लक्षात आले की भिक्षा पात्रात माती आहे. त्या पटकन साधूमहाराजांना म्हणाल्या, ‘‘महाराज, भिक्षापात्रात माती आणि कचरा आहे तर मी भिक्षा कशात घालू ?’ महाराज म्हणाले, ‘‘ मला चालेल. तुम्ही भिक्षा घाला.’’ त्यावर मंगलाबाई म्हणाल्या, ‘‘भिक्षापात्रात माती असताना त्यावर मी अन्न घालणार नाही.’’ हे ऐकून महाराज म्हणाले, ‘‘भिक्षापात्र स्वच्छ केल्यावरच तुम्ही भिक्षा घालणार ना. मग तोच तुम्हाला उपदेश आहे. काल तुम्ही दुःख आणि चितेनी ग्रासलेल्या होतात, तुमचे मन अस्वस्थ होते; मग मी तुम्हाला कसा उपदेश केला असता ?’’ गुरुचा उपदेश घेताना मन अगदी निर्मळ असायला हवे.
तात्पर्य - मन निर्मळ असेल तर त्यात भर घालणारी प्रत्येक गोष्ट निर्मळच होते.
