A great Charitable
Once Arjuna is with Krishna, he hears Krishna's praise of Karna's charitable personality. Arjuna is not spared when Lord Krishna says, "There is no one as charitable as him", and he says "Lord, give me a chance, I will show you how charitable I am." Krishna smiles inwardly and says ok.
The next day he takes Arjuna near a mountain and says “Arjuna, there are gold mines in this mountain. This mountain that belongs to me from today is yours. But there is a condition. The citizens of the village at the foot of this mountain should be properly compensated.”
Arjuna says “Okay” and calls the village chiefs and says “Gentlemen, from today I am the owner of this mountain. Lord Krishna himself has given it to me. I want to share with you the gold that I get from the gold mine in this mountain. But I myself will be present at the time of distribution to ensure proper distribution. Gather everyone tomorrow morning.”
The next day all the villagers come together. Arjuna himself is present. But while some want an equal share, others want the key people to get a little more share “without giving equal share to all”. Some say “we will do the gold mining and refining, so we want more share. “Many people have many opinions and arguments. No solution can be found.” Arjun tells everyone, “Come on today, there is no solution. We will sit tomorrow. Everyone go home and think about it.”
Another day dawns. The discussion starts again. But far from a solution, disputes escalate and even fights occur. Then Arjuna is not left and he says "Come on, I will decide and let you know."
Arjuna gets a little annoyed and goes to Krishna and tells the truth of what happened and asks "Lord, what should I do with you so that I can bring justice to all?" Lord Krishna says “Arjuna, whatever I think will happen. “I was saying that Karna is the true philanthropist. You will know tomorrow.”
The next day, through the servant, Krishna bids farewell to Lord Karna and calls him near that mountain. And Arjuna is also asked to come there.
In the morning, Karna, Arjuna and Krishna himself gather near the mountain. Krishna says to Karna “O Karna, I gave this mountain with gold mine in front to Arjuna two days ago. Just tell him that even if the mountain is given away, the villagers at the foothills should be properly compensated. But for the last two days he could not do anything. So from today I am taking away this mountain from Arjuna and giving it to you. But the condition is the same, the villagers at the foothills should be paid fairly. "
Karna politely bows to Krishna and accepts the proposal. Immediately the servant bids farewell to the villagers and calls them. Villagers come. Lord Krishna and Arjuna are there. Karna stands before the villagers and says “Citizens, some time ago Lord Krishna himself has given me this gold mine mountain. From today I am the owner of this mountain. But at this moment I give all the rights of this mountain to you villagers and give up my right over it. The villagers should all share it properly and be happy.” So he bows down to Lord Krishna and leaves.
Arjuna gets a little confused and asks Lord Krishna, “Lord, I don't understand how Karna is the best philanthropist in this way. On the contrary, I think he shirked his responsibility and threw it on the villagers. Please explain to me.”
Lord Krishna said to Arjuna “Arjuna, temptation can be anything. Even if it is true that you are not tempted by that gold-mine mountain, but in your mind, "You alone can judge, you alone can distribute the gold, if you don't, how will the villagers share the gold?" Such a feeling arose. Even if you are not interested in a mountain of gold, you are surely tempted to maintain your image without realizing it. But Karna is not like that. He gave the responsibility to the villagers and left.”
Arjuna agreed and Manoman saluted Karna's charity.

श्रेष्ठ दानशूर
एकदा अर्जुन कृष्णा बरोबर असताना , कृष्णाच्या तोंडून कर्णाच्या दानशूर व्यक्तिमत्वाचे कौतुक ऐकतो. “त्याच्या एवढा दानवीर कोणी नाही” असे जेव्हा भगवान कृष्ण म्हणतात तेव्हा अर्जुनाला राहवत नाही, आणि तो म्हणतो “भगवान मला एक संधी द्या, मीही किती दानशूर आहे हे तुम्हाला दाखवून देईन.” कृष्ण मनातल्या मनात हसतो आणि ठिक आहे म्हणतो.
दुसऱ्या दिवशी तो अर्जुनाला एका पर्वता जवळ घेऊन जातो आणि म्हणतो “अर्जुना, या पर्वतात सोन्याच्या खाणी आहेत. आज पासून माझ्या मालकीचा असलेला हा पर्वत तुझा. पण एक अट आहे. या पर्वताच्या पायथ्याशी जे गाव आहे त्यातल्या नागरिकांना योग्य मोबदला मिळाला पाहिजे.”
अर्जुन “ठिक आहे” म्हणतो आणि गावातल्या प्रमुखांना बोलवून सांगतो “सज्जनहो, आज पासून मी या पर्वताचा मालक आहे. स्वतः भगवान कृष्णांनी मला तो दिला आहे. मी या पर्वतातील सोन्याच्या खाणीतून मिळणारे सोने तुम्हाला वाटू इच्छितो. पण वाटणी योग्य प्रकारे व्हावी म्हणून मी स्वतः वाटणीच्या वेळी उपस्थित राहणार आहे. उद्या सकाळी सर्वांना एकत्र करा.”
दुसऱ्या दिवशी सर्व ग्रामस्थ एकत्र येतात. अर्जुन स्वतः उपस्थित असतो. परंतु काहींना समान वाटा मिळावा असे वाटत असते, तर काही जणांना “सर्वांना समान वाटा न देता” मुख्य लोकांना थोडा अधिक वाटा मिळावा असे वाटते. काहीं म्हणतात “सोने काढण्याचे आणि शुद्ध करण्याचे काम आम्ही करणार, त्यामुळे आम्हाला अधिक वाटा हवा. “ अनेक जणांची अनेक मते येतात आणि वाद होतात. तोडगा काही सापडत नाही.” अर्जुन सर्वांना सांगतो, “चला आज काही तोडगा निघत नाही. आपण उद्या बसू. सर्वांनी घरी जाऊन यावर विचार करून या.”
दुसरा दिवस उजाडतो. पुन्हा चर्चेला सुरुवात होते. पण तोडगा निघणे दूर, वाद वाढून अगदी मारामारी चा प्रसंग येऊन ठेपतो. मग अर्जुनाला राहवत नाही आणि तो म्हणतो “चला चालते व्हा, मीच काय तो निर्णय घेतो आणि कळवतो तुम्हाला.”
अर्जुन थोडा वैतागून कृष्णाकडे जातो आणि घडलेली हकीकत ऐकवतो आणि विचारतो “भगवन, तूच संग आता मी काय करावे म्हणजे मी सर्वांना न्याय मिळवून देईन?” भगवान कृष्ण म्हणतात “अर्जुना मला वाटल तेच झाल. “मी म्हणत होतो ना की कर्णच खरा दानशूर आहे. तुला कळेल उद्या.”
दुसऱ्या दिवशी सेवकातर्फे कृष्ण भगवान कर्णाला निरोप धाडून त्या पर्वताच्या जवळ बोलावतात. आणि तिथे अर्जुनाला सुद्धा यायला सांगतात.
सकाळी कर्ण , अर्जुन आणि स्वतः कृष्ण पर्वताच्या जवळ जमतात. कृष्ण कर्णाला म्हणतात “हे कर्णा, हा समोरचा सोन्याची खाण असलेला पर्वत मी दोन दिवसापूर्वी अर्जुनाला दिला होता. त्याला फक्त एवढच सांगितल की पर्वत दिला तरी, पायथ्याशी असलेल्या गावकर्यांना योग्य मोबदला मिळायला हवा. पण गेले दोन दिवस त्याला काही हे जमले नाही. त्यमुळे आज पासून हा पर्वत मी अर्जुनाकडून काढून तुला देत आहे. पण अट तीच, पायथ्याशी असलेल्या गावकर्यांना योग्य मोबदला मिळायला हवा. ”
कर्ण एकदम अदबीने कृष्णाला नमस्कार करतो आणि प्रस्ताव स्वीकारतो. लगेच सेवकाकडून गावकर्यांना निरोप धाडतो आणि बोलवून घेतो. गावकरी येतात. भगवान कृष्ण आणि अर्जुन तिथेच असतात. कर्ण गावकर्यांसमोर उभा राहतो आणि म्हणतो “नागरिकहो, काही वेळा पूर्वीच स्वतः भगवान कृष्णाने मला हा सोन्याची खाण असलेला पर्वत मला दिला आहे. आज पासून मी या पर्वताचा मालक आहे. पण या क्षणी मी या पर्वताचे सर्व हक्क तुम्हा गावकर्यांना देतो आहे आणि माझा या वरचा अधिकार सोडतो आहे. गावकर्यांनी सर्वांनी मिळून योग्य त्या प्रकारे याचे वाटप करावे आणि सुखी राहावे.” असे म्हणून तो भगवान श्री कृष्णाला नमस्कार करून निघून जातो.
अर्जुन थोडा विचारात पडतो आणि भगवान कृष्णाना विचारतो “प्रभू, मला या प्रकारातून कर्ण सर्वश्रेष्ठ दानशूर कसा हे समजले नाही. उलट पक्षी त्याने आपली जबाबदारी झटकून गावकर्यांवर टाकली असे मला वाटते. कृपा करून मला समजावून सांग.”
भगवान कृष्ण अर्जुनाला म्हणाले “अर्जुना, मोह कसलाही असू शकतो. तुला त्या सोन्याची खान असलेल्या पर्वताचा मोह झाला नाही हे जरी खरे असले, तरी तुझ्या मनात “तूच न्यायदान करू शकतोस, तूच त्या सोन्याचे वाटप करू शकतोस, तू केले नाहीस तर गावकरी सोने कसे वाटून घेतील?” असा भाव निर्माण झाला. तुला जरी सोन्याच्या पर्वतात रस नसला तरी, नकळत का होईना तुझी प्रतिमा सांभाळण्याचा मोह नक्की झाला. पण कर्ण तसा नाही. त्याने गावकर्यांवर जबाबदारी दिली आणि निघून गेला.”
अर्जुनाने मान्य केले आणि मनोमन कर्णाच्या दानशूरवृत्तीला वंदन केले.
