The knowledge
During Buddha's time there was a famous king named 'Pasenadi'. He was ruling over a country called 'Kosala'. In his court there were many noble ministers and mighty chieftains. Pasenadi Raja always glorified the various wise and mighty people of his kingdom. To such a Brahmin named 'Lohiccha', he gave a village named 'Salvatika' as a reward. Lohich was known as a very humble and knowledgeable person. Everyone praised him and respected him because of his learning. But he had a great vice.
He used to think selfishly and narrowly that he should not share his knowledge with others. Don't give your knowledge to others. That knowledge is of no use to anyone else. The people of Salvatika used to condemn Lohich for their narrow minded thinking that one man cannot do anything for another. One day the Tathagata went to the city of Baddha Salavatika.
The people there should be preached on virtue. For this purpose they stayed there for a few days, a servant told Lohich that a wise man named Tathagata Buddha had come to his town. He felt that we should pay due respect to this wise man. Lohiccha called his servant named Rosika and said, “Rosika, a wise man named Tathagata Buddha has come to your city of Salavatika. Go to them and honorably invite them to a meal.”
At the master's command, Rosika went to the Buddha and respectfully invited him for food. The Buddha accepted his invitation and agreed to come for the meal at the appointed time. The next day, when the food was ready, Lohiccha again sent Rosika to call the Buddha. Rosika went to Buddha and requested him to come to Lohitch's house. Buddha proceeded to go to Lohich.
As the Tathagata Buddha approached Lohich Brahman, the Sangha of Buddhas and Rosika were walking behind him. Everyone got tired while walking. Buddha, Sangha and Rosika all came to a stop on the way. Then speaking of Lohich, Rosika said to the Buddha, “Bhante, my lord Lohich is very wise, he honors all. But he does not give the knowledge he has to anyone. I think others should benefit from his knowledge. Therefore, O Buddha, you should remove this flaw, this narrow-mindedness in him. Let him be properly guided.' Then the Buddha began to walk slowly, thinking that 'this will happen'.
After a short while everyone reached Lohich. Lohich welcomed everyone very humbly. After that everyone had dinner together. After the meal, Lohich saluted the Buddha and sat next to him. Then the Buddha said to him, "Lohicha, do you think that the knowledge you have should not be given to others?" To which Lohich replied "Yes". The Buddha said to him, "Lohicha, why do you feel this way?" “Your knowledge is of no use to others,” said Lohich calmly. I feel that imparting our close knowledge to others does not benefit them at all.”
Then the Buddha explained to him, “Lohich, you are the head of the village of Salavatika. Therefore, if someone says that you should take all the income of this village alone and not give it to others, will it be right?" “No, that wouldn't be right,” Lohich said. Doing so would be like doing injustice to other people in the city. If they do not get their fair share of the total income, they will consider me as an enemy.
All the people of the city will hate me. All this would be fatal to me.” Hearing him, the Buddha calmly said, “Lohich, the Pasenadi king is the chief of the Kosala country. Therefore, would it be right if the king alone took all the revenue of the country and gave nothing to others?” At this Lohich immediately said, "Well, that wouldn't be right. Although the king owns the country, everyone has the right to the income.
If everyone does not get income, it will be unfair to them. All people will hate the king, consider the king as an enemy. All this will be fatal to the king. On the contrary, if everyone gets the right to property, everyone will be better off. Everyone will praise the king, respect him. Therefore it is proper for the king not to take all the revenue alone but to give it to all.” Hearing his answer, the Buddha smiled and said, “Well, your answers are very correct. Lohitch, what you said about wealth, income also applies to knowledge.
It is far superior to wealth. If the knowledge we have will benefit others, we should not keep that knowledge alone but also give it to others. This will not only benefit others, but they will also develop feelings of love, respect and friendship towards us. All this will be beneficial for you. Therefore, O Lohich, the right to knowledge is equal to all.
Knowledge we must pass on to others.” After hearing this, Lohich realized his mistake. He joined Buddha's hands and said, "Bhante, forgive me." You have shown me the way to prosperity, just as one should straighten the path and guide the one who has gone astray. Accept me as your worshipper.” Buddha approached him lovingly and forgave him. Everyone saluted the Buddha with great respect and joy.
Meaning – Knowledge is the best wealth. Don't keep the knowledge you have to yourself and give it to others when needed. Equal knowledge to all
