Who is really educated ?
Two young men once approached the world famous philosopher Socrates to become his disciple. He took them both to a lake and asked them both the same question, "What do you see in this lake?"
The first replied, "I see my reflection in this lake. The second replied, "I see in this lake, apart from my reflection, the aquatic animals in it, fishes, turtles, frogs, etc."
Hearing his reply, Socrates refused to take the first youth as his disciple, but accepted the second as his disciple.
A friend of Socrates was with him at that time. He asked the reason for refusing to disciple the first young man. Then Socrates said, "When the first youth looked into the lake, he saw only his own reflection in it."
This means that after getting education, he will use it only to support himself and his family.
He will not even think about the fact that he has some duties towards the surrounding society. So why should I waste my time educating such a young man?"
Moral: The truly educated is the one who thinks of others.
खरा शिक्षित कोण ?
विश्वविख्यात तत्त्ववेत्ता सॉक्रेटिस याच्याकडे एकदा दोन तरुण त्याचे शिष्यत्व पत्करण्यासाठी गेले. तो त्या दोघांनाही एका सरोवराकाठी घेऊन गेला व त्याने त्या दोघांनाही एकच प्रश्न विचारला, "तुम्हाला या सरोवरात काय दिसते?"
पहिल्याने उत्तर दिले, "मला या सरोवरात माझे प्रतिबिंब दिसत आहे. तर दुसन्याने उत्तर दिले, "मला या सरोवरात माझ्या प्रतिबिंबाशिवाय त्यात असलेले मासे, कासवे, बेडूक इत्यादी जलचर प्राणी दिसत आहेत."
त्याचे तसे उत्तर ऐकून सॉक्रेटिसने पहिल्या तरुणाला शिष्य करून घेण्यास नकार दिला, तर दुसऱ्याचा आपला शिष्य म्हणून स्वीकार केला.
सॉक्रेटिसचा एक मित्र त्या वेळी त्याच्याबरोबर होता. त्याने त्या पहिल्या तरुणाला शिष्य करून घेण्यास नकार दिल्याचे कारण विचारले. तेव्हा सॉक्रेटिस म्हणाला, "पहिल्या तरुणाने सरोवरात पाहिले असता, त्याला फक्त त्यात स्वतःचे प्रतिबिंब दिसते.
याचा अर्थ शिक्षण घेतल्यावर त्याचा उपयोग तो केवळ स्वतःचे व स्वतःच्या कुटुंबाचे उदरभरण करण्यासाठी करणार.
भोवतालच्या समाजाबाबत आपली काही कर्तव्ये आहेत, या गोष्टीचा त्याच्या मनात विचारही येणार नाही. मग अशा तरुणाला शिक्षण देण्यात मी माझा वेळ फुकट कशाला घालवू?"
बोध : इतरांचा विचार करतो तोच खरा शिक्षित .
